TCRA Wants you to Check if your Mobile Phone is Genuine


The government of Tanzanian through Tanzanian Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has directed all users to check and verify if their mobile phones and other related devices are genuine.

The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) is a quasi independent Government body responsible for regulating the Communications and Broadcasting sectors in Tanzania. It was established under the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Act No.12 of 2003 to regulate the electronic communications, and Postal services, and management of the national frequency spectrum in the United Republic of Tanzania.

The verification will be done through checking of International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number, Over the period of 3 months of usage corresponding Telecom service providers will match the IMEI number of the device in use with user details and he or she will be identified and registered as the owner of the device.

The government Motive

1. To Prevent the theft of Cell phones
After proper reporting, The stolen cell phone will be blocked and cannot be used in any telecom network within the country.

2. Law enforcement
Country Laws require victims of cell phones theft to report immediately to authorities after the incident. Authorities will prove ownership of the stolen cell phone in comparison with the registered IMEI. This verification is necessary for further legal process.

3. Enforcing usage of genuine devices
Apart from many other disadvantages, fake electronic devices may have negative impacts to users health and country economy. Through this directive Tanzanian government aimed to enforce the new culture of using only genuine cell phones.

How to verify if your cell phone is genuine

Step 1. Dial *#06# to see your device IMEI on your Smartphone or Tablet
Step 2. Write the displayed number down,

Step 3a. Visit TCRA (Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority) Website OR

It’s better to use the website, as you will get more information then the SMS,

Step 3b. Send SMS with IMEI number to 15090
Step 4. You should receive a reply SMS with your device model name.
It should be the name of the device under the verification process, otherwise it is a fake one.

What i understood is: if the imei numbers says that your phone model is Samsung S5, and when you check your phone by going to “Settings” then “About”  then “Phone Identity”. It will say under “Model Number”, which model is your Phone. So if its written “S5”. Then that means, its GENUINE. It’s that easy..

What to do in case your cell phone is fake

Users of fake devices will be given a period of six months to buy new ones. After that period all cell phones which verified as fake ones will be automatically blacklisted and won’t qualify for usage through any telecom network within the country. By 16th June, 2016 all fake cell phones will be automatically blacklisted.
